Let’s face it, we haven’t yelled about our exes as we did when Kelly Clarkson released “Since U Been Gone”, whipped our heads like we did to “Shake It” by Metro Station, or had us begging the DJ “Please Don’t Stop the Music” by Rihanna. This only has us asking the question, “Will pop music ever have that effect again?”
In the last few years, we’ve seen the 90s and early 2000s fashion styles come back … does this mean that pop-punk is too?
We’ve rounded up the 5 artists that are shaking up the radio waves walking into 2023. Let’s hope it keeps going
1. Miley Cyrus

Starting the year off stronger and more confident than ever, Miley Cyrus teases an album release with her lead single, “Flowers“. This triumphant break up anthem broke records by being the most streamed song in a single week on Spotify. With its catchy melody and interpolations inspired by “When I Was Your Man” by Bruno Mars and “I Will Survive” By Gloria Gaynor, “Flowers” was a pop-hit before it was released. Her album, “Endless Summer Vacation” is set for release March 10th, 2023.

2. SZA

Debuting her sophomore album, “SOS”, SZA takes us on a musical journey of anger and sadness intertwined with pop-punk, pop-rock. trap, and contemporary R&B. Songs like “Kill Bill“, “Low“, “Snooze” quickly took over TikTok that only added fuel to the fire on the long awaited album. With contributors like Jay Versace, Carter Lang, and Lizzo this album is topping charts and walking into 2023 with its 6th week as #1 on the Billboard charts.

3. Sam Smith

Sam Smith makes a return to 2023 with his 4th album, “Gloria” which was released on January 27th, 2023. Smith is known for his slow melodies such as, “Lay Me Down” and “Too Good At Goodbyes“. Since then he has reinvented the way he produces describing this album as, “emotional, sexual and spiritual liberation, and [is] a coming-of-age record.” This dance pop album features Jessie Reyez, Koffee, and Calvin Harris so there’s sure to be more chart toppers. His single, “Unholy” featuring Kim Petras, has been on the Billboard Hot 100 list for 17 weeks now and is Grammy nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group performance.

4. Paramore

Ain’t it fun that Paramore is BACK? This past year, Paramore started making festival appearances and dropping social media hints about their 6th studio album after a 5-year hiatus. Known for their iconic pop-punk/rock sound, the band has released 3 songs so far, “This Is Why“, “The News”, and “C’est Comme Ça“, which lean more into mental health awareness and politics with a post-punk revival edge. Paramore will beging their 2023 tour on February 6, 2023. The album, “This Is Why” is set to be released on February 10th, 2023.

5. Shakira

Shakira and Bizarrap, dive right into 2023 with “BZRP Music Session Vol. 53”. This diss track shot straight to the top and broke Spotify’s record for the fastest Latin song in history to hit 100 million streams in a single day, surpassing Bad Bunny. Shakira is taking back her reputation after a messy divorce with former athlete, Gerard Piqué. Fans hint at a new album, but nothing has been confirmed yet, but from the sounds of this diss track, it’s definitely not the last.
